Down The Berry Islands Chain

01/11 s/v Trouble Update: Trouble is on the move again. I left Great Harbour Cay Marina this morning and am making my way down The Berry Islands chain. I’ll roughly be in the same area that I took Ava when she came out for Christmas. I’ll move slowly down the chain till Thursday when it looks like it might be good wind to go over Eleuthera. Eleuthera is a skinny long Island just east and south of The Berries. I’ll head to Spanish Wells, in Eleuthera and spend a few days if not a week, while I reprovision some, as it’s a bigger town than Great Harbour Cay. I pulled into my first stop, Soldier Cay, this afternoon. While anchoring I noticed a sea turtle pop his head up and seemed to wave his flipper at me. How friendly of him. After I got my anchor set I was going to jump in and make sure it was set well and do some snorkeling. I then noticed a very large Shark circling my boat.

Shark Circling Anchor

Hmm, I guess I won’t be checking the anchor. He hovered around my boat the rest of the afternoon, along with a huge barracuda. I suspect some fishermen must come here and clean their fish and feed the sharks. He must have been 7 feet. I couldn’t tell what kind, but either way, I was not going to get in the water. Today’s passage was good. I thought it was going to be smooth sailing but it got pretty lumpy and I had to sail upwind which makes it even more uncomfortable. Tomorrow I’ll move about 2 miles to where Ava and I were at Hoffman Cay. It’s through the very shallow area again, but I’ll transit it at high tide this time.
