Calabash Bay Long Island

03/01 s/v Trouble Update: Last update I said I was headed to George Town after Cat Island. Well, I ended up following the other boats to Calabash Bay, Long Island. We rented a car the next day and drove the island. First, we stopped at the Freshwater Shrimp Hole behind an old abandoned church. I thought the church was more interesting than the shrimp. Next, we stopped at a cave that we paid to have a tour of. A lot bigger than I expected, kind of cool. Then we went down to Deans Blue Hole, which goes down over 600 feet. Kinda creepy to snorkel over it. The blue water hole is maybe only 100’ wide. It’s a hot spot for freediving competitions.

Next was a couple of churches built by a priest who changed denominations after building the first so he built a second. Also, check out a small resort and a few eateries on the way. It was a long day driving, but we packed a lot into that day. In front of our anchorage was a very nice resort that had great food and was very welcoming to the cruising community. We ended up there each evening. I left Long Island and the other boats, I was cruising with. I was chided that I was “Breaking Up The Band”, but I had to get to George Town before Kurt arrived. I had a great sail to Emerald Bay Marina and got docked and tied off while being judged by the crews of the mega-yachts around me. I pulled it off flawlessly, which impressed the crews as I was single handling it. Everyone here is super nice. I even got a tour of the huge catamaran behind me. I’ve spent the last two days washing down and cleaning the boat. It’s been a while since she’s had a good washing. Kurt arrives today and we should have a few great adventures while he’s here.
